Chase Daniel Has a Theory on Why Trubisky Has Regressed

-

Simply not taking another step forward is one thing. Yet for Mitch Trubisky to not even match the form he had last season? In fact, he’s far away from even that level at this point. It’s a mystery that Chicago Bears fans and media have tried to solve all year. Part of isn’t entirely his fault. Bears receivers lead the NFL in dropped passes. Protection from the offensive line has been erratic and the running game is ranked 29th in the league. This puts a ton of pressure on the quarterback to do everything himself. Chase Daniel knows. He’s seen it before.

Obviously Mitch hasn’t been able to.

Still, a lot of the problems can be traced to him. His execution of the offensive system is subpar. He still doesn’t see or read the field well and seems to suffer from indecision like never before. He takes awful sacks and isn’t even running it himself anymore. Something has changed and it feels like it’s between his ears. Daniel alluded to this during his most recent interview with Bears media. He believes it isn’t Trubisky wilting under the outside pressure, but the pressure he’s putting on himself.

Chase Daniel knows Trubisky better than most

One could take Daniel at his word. Few people have had a tighter connection with Trubisky in his career than the veteran backup. So when he says something like this, it’s fair to say it comes from a place of knowledge. People have said for years that Trubisky is a perfectionist. He tries to do everything right all the time. This isn’t a bad mindset to have. However, a lot of perfectionists can’t handle when they start making mistakes and start putting more and more pressure on themselves to do better.

This inevitably leads to more mistakes. Trubisky needs to get back to his mindset from last year. He wasn’t focused on avoiding mistakes. He was focused on making plays. If he threw an interception or fumbled, that’s unfortunate but move on to the next series. Just keep attacking and keep executing. He hasn’t gotten there yet and he’s running out of time to do so. It feels like the team is running out of patience for him to figure it out.
