Steve Smith Sr. joins chorus saying Mitch Trubisky has to go

-

It would appear the grace period for Mitch Trubisky is at an end. As if there ever was one. The Chicago Bears quarterback continues to get kicked while he’s down, proving again that the NFL is an unforgiving place. Already former quarterback Chris Simms called his intelligence into question in regards to his failure to master more of Matt Nagy’s offense. Then two-time Super Bowl winner Chris Long piled on by stating his own belief the team will likely move on by no later than 2021.

Now another name got in on the action. Former All-Pro wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. has never been known for pulling his punches. When he says something, he’ll say it without a single ounce of diplomacy attached to it. If people don’t like it, he couldn’t care less. So one can imagine Bears fans squirmed when the question about whether or not the team could still make the playoffs at 3-2 during a spot on NFL Network.

His answer was as brutal and uncompromising as one would expect.

“The Chicago Bears are in trouble because they have Mitch Trubisky who they gave a king’s ransom for. He’s not their franchise quarterback. He’s not efficient, and he doesn’t make good decisions. It’s time to move on people.”

Steve Smith Sr. is harsh but still talking with evidence

People might not like hearing it said that way, but the problem is there isn’t much evidence to counter his statements with. Trubisky is in his third season as a professional. He’s still making a lot of the same mistakes he did as a rookie. He can’t read coverages fast enough and isn’t always able to move off his first read. Not to mention the fact he keeps finding ways to get himself injured thanks to his willingness to scramble so often.

People can’t play the lack of experience card anymore. He is in the second year of Nagy’s offense. Execution should be crisper. He should know consistently where to go with the ball. That hasn’t been the case. Smith may not be nice with his phrasing, but the man knows what good quarterbacks are supposed to look like. The fact he’s saying this without leaving any room for hope is telling. What remains unknown is whether the Bears brass is starting to see it the same way.

There isn’t anything they can do about for the time being. Eleven games remain in the season. Trubisky will have them all to himself. That’s how much time he has left to change the narrative. Otherwise what Smith says will come true.
