Longtime Insider Jay Glazer Insists Mitch Trubisky Isn’t Done Yet

-

There are plenty of people out there who are declaring Mitch Trubisky dead. He never should’ve been drafted 2nd overall and will never amount to anything in the NFL. While it’s true his start to 2019 has been a disappointment and raises questions about his ceiling as a starter, it still feels a bit too soon for something like that. Should the Chicago Bears begin exploring new options? That can’t hurt. Should they cut their losses and just finish the year with Chase Daniel?

Of course not.

Eleven games remain in the season. The Bears are 3-2 and still in the thick of the NFC playoff race. Trubisky also had his best game of the season with three touchdown passes against Washington prior to injuring his shoulder. The smart plan is to get him back on the field and let him at least finish the season, right? Some don’t think so. Already questions are growing about possible QB options at the upcoming trade deadline at the end of October.

One person who urged people to tap the breaks on Trubisky is prominent NFL insider Jay Glazer who stated his belief that the young quarterback is still capable of realizing his potential.

“Honestly I don’t think so, but if I’m being totally fair here the jury is still out. I think last year he showed promise. In the off-season, they were sold that the promise he showed would skyrocket this year. It certainly hasn’t. Now, does he go backward? I don’t think there have been enough games to decide if it’s his ceiling but I think they all need more of an upward trajectory from him and Matt Nagy together.”

Mitch Trubisky will have a chance to rescue his job

The good news for Trubisky is that the upcoming schedule should feature a number of teams that have fairly weak pass defenses. This includes the Giants (31st), Eagles (29th), and Lions (28th). Sometimes a QB just needs to get on a roll before he starts playing better. A somewhat easier array of opponents to throw against would be a nice change of pace. Of course, none of that matters if his offensive line doesn’t protect him. Something they often struggled to do before the bye.

Trubisky needs to stop playing scared and just let it go. Once he’s able to relax and play with more confidence, the odds are he’ll start to execute better. Hopefully, that will start this Sunday. The New Orleans Saints are a perfect test to see where he’s at. They have a talented secondary and a good pass rush. Trubisky will need to be on his game. This should make for an interesting evaluation of how far away he still is.
