The Cubs Will Have A Top Payroll In 2020

-

Crane Kenney was on 670 The Score Wednesday morning and of course talk of the Cubs payroll for the future was discussed. The Cubs will launch their new Marquee Sports Network in February and although all the carriage deals haven’t been worked out yet the Cubs should have more resources to spend in the offseason.

Kenney has already mentioned that earlier in the year and he said it again on Wednesday. The Cubs expect to have a top 2-3 payroll in 2020, Kenney said.

Yet, as Brett from Bleacher Nation broke down perfectly, Kenney used some lawyer talk to cover his ass if the Cubs don’t end up having a top payroll again. His comments in that 670 The Score tweet really only says Kenney doesn’t think the payroll will change much as it relates to anything that comes from the TV network.

Also, he said baseball spending, which isn’t specifically payroll.

So, I mean, things can always change. You know, like last year when Theo Epstein made it pretty clear he wanted to make big changes and then a month later the Cubs all of a sudden couldn’t spend any money in a big free agent class.

The Cubs have the second highest payroll behind the Red Sox in 2019.

And while Kenney chose his words carefully, he did say that the Ricketts “support” a top 2-3 payroll. So, that’s what Cubs fans should expect for next year.

You can listen to the entire Kenney interview below. It begins at the 15-minute mark.
