Jon Lester finally didn’t pitch poorly for the Cubs, allowing just one earned run in five innings, but the offense couldn’t do much against Tyler Mahle. The same Mahle who had given up nine earned runs in his previous two starts in eight innings combined.

Mahle pitched six innings against the Cubs on Wednesday and allowed just one hit, a Nick Castellanos double that led to him scoring on a sac-fly in the fourth inning. But that was it for the Cubs offense, which couldn’t get more than one hit against a pitcher who had a 5.11 ERA entering Wednesday’s game.

Embarrassing performance by the offense.

Willson Contreras tied the game in the seventh with a solo home run, but the Reds eventually broke through in the 10th, winning 3-2.

The Cubs finished 8-11 against the Reds this season.

With their second loss in a row, the Cubs are now three games back of the Cardinals. They’ll begin a four-game series at Wrigley Field on Thursday. The Cubs play the Cardinals in seven of their last 10 games of the season.

The Cubs and Brewers are tied for the second Wild Card spot and both trail the Nationals by 1.5 games for the top Wild Card spot.
