The Cubs start a big four-game series against the Cardinals Thursday night, but Cole Hamels won’t be pitching this weekend.

Hamels will be skipped, as the Cubs say he’s dealing with left shoulder fatigue. Right-handed pitcher Alec Mills will pitch in his place on Friday. Hamels will apparently only be skipped once and will start next week.

Oh and remember how we all kept saying that Hamels wasn’t right after coming back from his oblique injury? Well, he’s been dealing with this new shoulder issue for several weeks.

Hamels not starting might actually be a good thing. He hasn’t had much command since returning from the injured list in August, walking 21 batters in 38 innings. Hamels has only pitched more than five innings twice in nine starts and that includes failing to reach the fifth inning in his previous three outings.

Mills has been solid for the most part, mainly working out of the bullpen for the Cubs during the past two seasons.

Mills has a 3.42 ERA in 26.1 innings this season for the Cubs.
