Wait, Did Brandon Morrow Just Say He’s Coming Back This Season?!?!

-

Let me begin by saying and again this should be made very clear, fans shouldn’t expect to see Brandon Morrow pitch for the Cubs again. He’s been out with an elbow injury since last July, had surgery in November, when the team figured out what exactly was wrong with him and since then he’s suffered a few setbacks.

We haven’t really heard any updates on him for a couple months and going off Jed Hoyer’s latest comments it really does sound like Morrow is done.

Last year, before he had surgery in the offseason, Morrow kept saying he felt something in his elbow, but would try and pitch through it. Ultimately, the Cubs shut him down in September after his final attempt to ramp up for a return.

Yet, there was never a definite timetable and Morrow was never confident in saying he was coming back. Even this past spring training all we knew was that he was going to be out until at least May and then he had a setback and was shut down for a period of time.

HOWEVER!!!

This statement from Morrow in Jesse Rogers story on Friday kinda seems definitive by the pitcher, or at least it’s the first time he’s actually given any semblance of a timetable for a return.

Via ESPN.

“With the way I’m feeling, I expect to progress quickly,” he said.

Things will have to move fast, as the Cubs have just 53 games left after their 6-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday, drawing them to within a half-game of first place in the NL Central. A September return for Morrow, as well as veteran Ben Zobrist, could give the team a huge boost.

“I guess not more than a month away from being back,” Morrow said.

“Not more than a month away from being back.”

Again, don’t expect anything, but this really does seem like the first time Morrow’s given any kind of timetable. I guess we’ll find out if that optimism means anything soon enough.

It sure would make for a great story if Morrow does return.
