Mitch Trubisky Helps Break Myth Madden Ratings Mean Jack Squat

-

It’s rather hilarious that some people take Madden ratings as gospel for how good NFL players are. For whatever reason, they think a bunch of corporate video game makers at one of the most overrated companies in the business today has their finger firmly on the pulse of the entire sport. They don’t. Not even close. Want proof? Fine. Let’s use their laughable progression ranking of Mitch Trubisky as an example.

When he was drafted as the 2nd pick in 2017, Madden gave him a rather normal rating of 73 overall. The mixture of inexperience and talent made that a fair enough choice. Then a year later going into 2018, the needle had moved to 74. Trubisky had delivered plenty of flash plays as a rookie but a lack of offensive identity and a pitiful amount of weapons led to him struggling. He finished with 2,193 yards and 7 touchdowns with 7 interceptions.

This is where it gets hilarious. Trubisky delivered one of the best seasons a Bears quarterback has had in years in 2018. He threw for over 3,200 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. He also rushed for 421 yards and another three touchdowns. This got him honored as a Pro Bowl alternate and resulted in an 11-3 record as a starter. One would think that was enough to give him a nice little bump into at least the 80s, right?

Like hell.

Mitch Trubisky proves ratings are driven by national popularity

Madden creators would like to have everybody believe they do all the groundwork necessary to make their ratings as accurate as possible. This revelation proves that is the furthest thing from the case. They do nothing more than conduct one big popularity contest. Just look at who had the highest ratings listed above. Patrick Mahomes is a 97 after winning MVP but Nick Foles, who’d won the Super Bowl the previous year and led Philadelphia back to the playoffs couldn’t even get above a 77?

Or what about Jared Goff posting an 83 after earning his second Pro Bowl nod in a row with over 4,600 yards with 32 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, getting his team to the Super Bowl? The rating system is a joke. They mean nothing because it’s a bunch of fans and corporate-paid game makers doing the rating. Not actual football people who get paid to evaluate this sport.

Either way, Bears fans should be great. Madden gave their quarterback an extra bit of motivation for 2019.
