Cubs shortstop Javier Báez originally accepted an invitation to participate in the 2019 HR Derby in Cleveland, but the two-time All-Star starter has ultimately decided not to partake in the competition.

Báez has been playing with a sore heel and he’s making the smart decision to get some extra rest.

It’s that time of the season when players are beginning to wear down. That’s evident when you see Wednesday night’s lineup for the Cubs in Pittsburgh.

Kris Bryant and Jason Heyward are both on the bench tonight.

The Cubs have also called up switch-hitter Robel Garcia, who’s expected to make his Cubs and MLB debut Friday in the series finale.

Theo Epstein said earlier on Wednesday that relief pitcher Dillon Maples will be optioned to make room for Garcia.

In other news, veteran Carlos González cleared waivers after the Cubs DFA’d him. González is now a free agent.

So, going forward, just like CarGo got a tryout, Garcia will get a look from the Cubs. Hopefully it goes a lot better.
