Draft Guru is Tired of People Overlooking Mitch Trubisky and Bears

-

Matt Miller of the Bleacher Report is established as one of the most respected NFL draft experts in the field today. His work has produced impressive accuracy in terms of predicting which players will eventually have success at the pro level. What people tend to not remember is that he more than most was a big supporter of Mitch Trubisky leading into the 2017 draft. Of all the quarterbacks in that class, he had him ranked #1.

That took a lot of courage given it was over the far more proven Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes. To his credit, Miller hasn’t flipflopped on his belief in Trubisky since then. During his most recent “Stick To Football” podcast for an NFC North preview, he made it clear he’s a big believer in what the Chicago Bears are building. They have an elite defense, more offensive weapons than ever and a wily head coach calling plays.

Yet his biggest statement was left for their young quarterback. One whom he believes is poised for a career year in 2019.

“Can we just stop underrating Mitch Trubisky as well? The dude played very, very well last year in the first year of a system. Really his first full year as a starter. I think we see him take a very big step this year. I have them going 12-4 and I would not be surprised if they are the #1 seed in the NFC when it’s all said and done.”

Mitch Trubisky is already better than half the QBs in the NFL

Nobody is going to say Trubisky is elite or even top 10 in the NFL. Yet to say he’s not good at all is simply untrue. The guy was a Pro Bowl alternate. Sure that doesn’t mean a ton but it proves he played well enough to get recognition from the wider NFL. He accounted for 3,947 total yards with 28 touchdowns in just 15 games. Considering it was his second year in the NFL and first in a brand new and complicated offense? That’s pretty impressive.

Is it so unreasonable to think he can be even better with that experience and knowledge of the system under his belt? Not to mention a pair of new running backs who add a far greater threat in the passing game with David Montgomery and Mike Davis. A more experienced and confident quarterback with more weapons usually leads to…you know…more production. Sure the NFL is unpredictable, but Miller isn’t wrong. It may be time to have a little faith in Trubisky.
