Why the Chicago Bears May Have Chosen Their New Throwbacks Well

-

Word has continued to leak out about the possible new Chicago Bears throwback uniforms for 2019. A fan revealed a surprising discovery at a Dick’s Sporting Goods in Algonquin. This just a few days before the 100th anniversary celebration the team is expected to hold from the 7th of June through the 9th. So the timing of this is interesting.

If it’s true, then the choice is an encouraging one. Why? Well here’s the backstory. This particular uniform variation was introduced by the George Halas and the organization in 1932. It was the first time the Bears had ever worn white jerseys. It was also the first time in the history of the NFL they’d officially named a team champions. That team?

The Bears with a 7-1-6 record after defeating the Portsmouth Spartans in the first ever playoff game 9-0. They weren’t done yet though. The very next season in 1933, they left any doubt about their stance as the best in football when they repeated as champions with a victory over the New York Giants in the first ever NFL championship game.

New Chicago Bears throwbacks, if official, have rich history

The uniform variation ended up lasting five seasons before being replaced in 1937. That last one in 1936 was the first time they introduced the white jersey, navy pants look. One that has carried through in different variations ever since. It’s also one that has served the franchise well since they’ve won some of their biggest championships wearing it.

In 1940 they crushed the Redskins 73-0 wearing a similar type. In 1985, they demolished the Patriost 46-10 in the Super Bowl. It will be fun to see if this new Bears team can summon some of that old magic from the founding days of the franchise.
