That Loss Against The Mets Was Annoying As Hell

Just another one-run loss for the Cubs, but this one felt especially annoying.

The Cubs were trailing 1-0 early on, but after an Albert Almora Jr. ground out tied the game, Yu Darvish drove in a run to give the Cubs a 2-1 lead.

Then, Darvish immediately lost the lead, giving up a two-run homer the very next inning.

But the Cubs took another lead, as Addison Russell hit a two-run homer in the fifth.

After striking out the first two batters in the sixth inning, Darvish gave up the lead again, allowing a game-tying home run.

As annoying as that was it got even worse. In the bottom of the sixth, Almora reached first on a throwing error by the third baseman. Joe Maddon decided to pinch hit for Darvish, who was 2-for-2 at the plate Friday, for Daniel Descalso. In case you’ve been living under a rock, Descalso has been horrible this season, hitting below .200. Since the start of May he has, what maybe five hits? Six hits? I’m not looking it up, but you get the point.

I mean, what are the chances that Descalso would have gotten a hit in the first place? Anyway, it didn’t matter because Almora was picked off from first. So, just like that, Darvish was out of the game and Brad Brach came in.

First batter he faced? A single to center and then a wild pitch that moved him up to second. Brach was able to get two outs and then Maddon took him out for Mike Montgomery.

For some reason Joe thinks Montgomery is good against left-handed hitters, despite getting proved time in and time out that he’s not.

Guess what happened next?

Lefty Jeff McNeil hit an RBI-single to right field to give the Mets a 5-4 lead.

Don’t worry, it gets more annoying.

In the bottom of the eighth, Anthony Rizzo got on base with a one-out single. After Javier Báez flew out to center, Willson Contreras hit a bloop single to left.

Boom, just like that the Cubs were in business, as Rizzo would be at second base representing the tying run. No reason to go to third because there are two outs and he’s already in scoring position, right? RIGHT?

Rizzo has been atrocious running the bases this year. Oh and there was also this weird play earlier in the game that was ruled a strikeout, but it was originally ruled a HBP for Rizzo and you can still make the case that it should have stayed that way.

So, that was annoying too.

Anyway, the Cubs went down in order in the ninth to lose.

All around, awful game by the Cubs.
