Chicago Bears Add Some Extra Spice to Their Special Teams

-

Matt Nagy has already shown he’s not afraid to dip into his connections from Kansas City in order to help the Chicago Bears. Last year he had some success doing that with guard Bryan Witzmann. This time around it seems the goal is to bring some help to the special teams as it was announced the team signed linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis.

Pierre-Louis has been a journeyman for most of his career. He was a 4th round pick for Seattle back in 2014 but arrived at a time when the team had no starting jobs open. So he spent three seasons with the team and transformed himself into one of the better special teams players at his position.

He made 14 tackles on kickoff and punt coverage units during his time there. This drew the attention of Kansas City who signed him in 2017. He led their third phase with three more tackles that year. Last season he went on to the New York Jets, made three tackles and also blocked a field goal.

Kevin Pierre-Louis also brings Chicago Bears value as a backup

While special teams was his primary selling point, don’t forget that Pierre-Louis was a 4th round pick for a reason. He comes from Boston College, a program known for producing quality defensive talent. Whenever he’s been called on to play defense, he’s produced some standout plays from time to time.

He made 35 tackles with the Chiefs in 2017 and deflected two passes. Then in their playoff loss to Tennessee, he made four tackles and also forced a fumble. Last year, despite playing in just nine games, he had two quarterback hits and a sack for the Jets.

The Bears may be set at inside linebacker with Roquan Smith and Danny Trevathan, but it’s clear Pierre-Louis has something to offer as a reserve. All around this is a quality signing for it being so late into free agency.
