Latest Signs Hint Bears Have Bigger Plans For Forgotten Player

-

The Chicago Bears offensive plan for 2019 is less about overhauling the roster and more about continuing to master the system. Head coach Matt Nagy believes the players are closer than ever to this. They no longer have to spend precious seconds thinking about plays and what their responsibilities are. The verbiage is becoming clearer and with that, they’re starting to react and play fast. This is the ultimate endgame.

However, that doesn’t mean there won’t be alterations to the personnel involved. The heavy hitters are expected back of course. Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel, Anthony Miller, Trey Burton, and Tarik Cohen all should be expected to get frequent attention from Mitch Trubisky. It won’t be them alone though. Others will be expected to step up.

One name that people are intrigued to see more of is Javon Wims. The former 7th round pick out of Georgia was a star during the 2018 preseason, but he didn’t get much action the rest of the year. Some wondered if the coaching staff had soured on him for whatever reason. Instead it may be the team was simply biding their time.

Recent signs show a Chicago Bears Javon Wims expansion plan

Taylor Gabriel is always active on social media. He made a series of interesting posts on Instagram on Tuesday. They showed he and a small collection of players on offense working together on throwing drills and exercise. Among those included were the obvious names like Trubisky and Robinson. Then there quietly in the background was Wims.

It’s interesting that Wims would be involved like that. If the Bears didn’t have designs on him being a bigger part of the offense in 2019, why would they ensure invite him to such intimate workout sessions with other guys who are clearly earmarked for significant snaps? Cordarrelle Patterson wasn’t there. Nor were Marvin Hall, Tanner Gentry, or Cyril Grayson.

Anthony Miller was absent but that’s because he’s recovering from shoulder surgery. It feels like the Bears are making a concerted effort to get the big 6’3 receiver ready for the season where they undoubtedly hope to catch future opponents by surprise with yet another weapon in their arsenal.

Wims showed a lot of promise last year but it was apparent he needed work, particularly in his route running. After over a year to work on it and furthering his connection with Trubisky? It stands to reason he may be poised for some sort of a breakout season this fall.
