Another Insider Confirms Bears Pushed Hard for This Free Agent

-

Most of the Chicago Bears moves in free agency to this point carried plenty of logic to them. Mike Davis added depth at running back. Cordarrelle Patterson fixed the kick returner position. Ted Larsen filled a needed backup spot at guard and center. Buster Skrine filled the left vacated by Bryce Callahan. Ha Ha Clinton-Dix did the same for Adrian Amos.

All of those moves were easy to understand and seem to make the team better. Yet there remains one persistent rumor regarding a Bears move that never happened but seems to have come awfully close. Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated revealed as much in his latest article. One where he stated that the Bears were one of two teams in hot pursuit of running back Adrian Peterson.

“9. The Redskins move to take care of Adrian Peterson early—signing him to a two-year, $8 million deal on Monday—was largely prompted by other teams’ interest in him. Which is amazing considering where he was at this time a year ago. This year, both the Bears and Jaguars were in it before Peterson decided to go back to DC.”

Chicago Bears Adrian Peterson interest still doesn’t make sense

This marks the second time this rumor has surfaced and it’s equally baffling now as before. The Bears have a young power back already in place with Jordan Howard. He’s 24-years old. Peterson is 34-years old. Both of them have basically the same skill set. They run well but aren’t much use otherwise as a pass protector or pass receiver.

Peterson is a bit more explosive than Howard but the Bears angle to get him still doesn’t make sense. It goes against everything GM Ryan Pace has been about to this point. He doesn’t like signing older players much, especially after some recent forays. Peterson would’ve cost more than Howard. Last but not least? The veteran doesn’t have the greatest reputation off the field.

Don’t forget he was in trouble for physically abusing his child and needed to literally sue to get back into the league. Not exactly a man who exhibits the high character of the team the Bears have built to this point. None of it makes sense, and the worst part is we’ll never know why.

Peterson re-signed for two more years in Washington and Pace has quietly moved on. People will never get a straight answer for what exactly he was thinking with this idea.
