Chicago Bears Deemed the Best Fit for This Upcoming Free Agent

-

The Chicago Bears free agency plan is known only to them at this point. Everybody is uncertain on what they intend to do both in regards to their own free agents and the outer market. Two key moves have already been made though. Bobby Massie was signed to a new extension and tight end Dion Sims was released. That’s two big offseason boxes checked already.

This leaves them with two big hurdles left to clear before the market opens this March. They are safety Adrian Amos and cornerback Bryce Callahan. Both were big parts of the Bears #1 defense last season and played arguably the best football of their careers. It’s no secret Chicago would prefer to keep them. However, they simply may not have the money.

So if they were to lose one or both of them, what is their next move? Marc Sessler of NFL.com has an idea. Rather than trying to find two players who can fill those voids, why not secure one player who can do a bit of both?

Lamarcus Joyner would bring unique versatility to Chicago Bears defense

When posting his best free agent fits for every NFC team, Sessler dropped an interesting name for the Bears in Los Angeles Rams safety Lamarcus Joyner.

“With safety Adrian Amos and promising slot corner Bryce Callahan set to hit the open market, the Bears have spots to fill in the secondary. Joyner would give Chicago a reliable defender with just one missed tackle over the past two seasons. Overall, he returned to the pack last autumn after a stellar 2017 campaign, but would fill an immediate need for this Super Bowl contender.”

Indeed Joyner is a fascinating name. What stands out most is his versatility. Not only is he a sound tackler in space, but he is also adept in coverage with four interceptions in the past two years. He can play the strong safety spot or the nickel corner spot if asked. A sort of chess piece that can be moved around the board.

The big question mark teams have had with him is his size. Joyner is only 5’8. This inevitably leads people to worry both about his ability to match up with bigger pass targets and also his durability. Since 2016 he has missed seven games with various injuries. So a lot is going to depend on how much money he demands.

He did just help his team reach the Super Bowl but he also turns 29-years old in November. This could end up being a tough negotiation.
