Green Bay Media Pressing Packers to Go After Vic Fangio

-

The modern NFL era is all about offense. People love points and love quarterbacks. That’s why a large majority of teams have gone about building their foundations around a combination of a quarterback and offensive-minded head coach. Green Bay has followed that blueprint for almost 30 years and has two Super Bowl titles and decades of success to show for it. However, new developments have some in the local media believing a Packers Vic Fangio union could be highly beneficial.

It sounds crazy. Green Bay actually intending to swipe a coach from a team they’ve dominated for decades. Then again, things have changed. The Chicago Bears are rulers of the NFC North now, and the biggest reason for it is their dominant defense which ranks 3rd overall in the NFL and first in takeaways with 34.

Tom Silverstein of Packers News on USA Today believes Green Bay would be doing themselves a huge disservice if they don’t at least make an effort to interview the veteran coordinator after the season. He could end up building the first proper dominant defense the team has had in 10 years.

“None of this is to say the 60-year-old Fangio is the right guy. It’s just if they don’t do their homework and at least interview him, they could be making a big mistake.

In the NFC North, Minnesota and Detroit have defensive head coaches. Both teams shut down Rodgers in their own buildings and will continue to pursue defensive dominance as the years go on.

The Packers used to have a strong offensive identity, but due to injury, waning talent at the skill positions and less than-MVP play from Rodgers, their defense has emerged as the strength of the team.”

Packers Vic Fangio connection already began before 2018 season started

It doesn’t sound likely at first. Aaron Rodgers runs the show up in Green Bay. They’ll want a head coach that crafts the team around him. However, it’s important to note that the Packers already showed a vested interest in Fangio before this media push began. They had hoped to make him the replacement for Dom Capers, whom they’d fired back in January. In the end, Matt Nagy sold him on returning to Chicago.

No doubt he’s not regretting that decision given his team is about to make the playoffs at the head of arguably the best defense in football. There’s logic to pursuing him. He’s got a vast array of experience, having been in the NFL since the 1980s. He is a proven mastermind on the defensive side who could ease the pressure on Rodgers to carry the team by himself as has been the case for years.

People talk about the age problem with him being 60. However, it’s important to remember that Rodgers is 35. His window isn’t exactly wide open either. If this is about getting another Super Bowl before it closes, then a hire like Fangio would make plenty of sense. All Bears fans can hope is they don’t seriously consider it.
