Time to Talk People Off the Mitch Trubisky Ledge (Again)

-

Okay. Let’s get this out of the way. Mitch Trubisky didn’t play a good game on Sunday. He barely connected on half his passes (26-of-50) with two interceptions. He continued his annoying trend of missing open receivers that would’ve resulted in big gains or even touchdowns. Yet some people are making it seem like Trubisky is the second-coming of Cade McNown. He’s the worst thing ever. He’s a bust.

What? Did they casually overlook the fact that Trubisky threw for 333 yards, ran for 81 and accounted for three touchdowns in the game? Bad quarterbacks don’t do stuff like that. Not against the Patriots. He could’ve been better, sure. To say he was terrible is simply untrue and reeks of people who may have an agenda rather than actually assessing the player.

On the year Trubisky has now thrown for 1,594 yards, 13 touchdowns, and six interceptions. That’s better than a 2-to-1 ratio. If one accounts for his rushing scores, it’s 16 touchdowns to six interceptions. He’s currently on pace to score 42 touchdowns with 16 interceptions, 4,250 passing yards, and 653 rushing yards. Can anybody call that a bad year?

The Mitch Trubisky hate movement is abnormally strong

Honestly, it’s difficult to understand why there’s such big movement of Bears fans who are practically salivating at the idea of Trubisky failing. Here’s a 24-year old kid with 18 career starts in the NFL and is starting to play better and they jump on him for every mistake as if he insulted their mothers. He is not Tom Brady. He is not Aaron Rodgers. Those guys didn’t become elite until they’d been in the league for a few years.

Why isn’t Mitch getting the same courtesy? Maybe some people are just impatient. Maybe some never wanted him drafted to begin with. Then again maybe no matter what he does will ever be good enough for some people. The fact of the matter is Trubisky is playing at a level this town hasn’t seen at quarterback in a long, long time.

He can throw. He can run and he can deliver when the team needs it most. The bulk of previous Bears QBs would’ve wilted after throwing two backbreaking interceptions. How did Trubisky respond? He led a touchdown drive in 4th quarter to cut the lead in half and almost hit Kevin White for a tying score to force overtime, coming one yard short. This season he now has three touchdown passes and one interception in the final 15 minutes.

Mitch embodies Chicago so much. He’s humble. He’s hardworking and he battles his ass off every single week to win. Isn’t that what people wanted from a Bears quarterback? This team has been in every single ball game this year. Only 3 of their 13 defeats with him under center have been by 10 points or more. Two were against teams that played in the NFC championship last year.

Prior to his getting the starting job, that number was nine of their previous 16 losses dating back to the start of 2016. Appreciate what you have, Bears fans.
