Despite Tough Loss Mitch Trubisky Took Another Step Forward in Miami

-

Mitch Trubisky gets a lot of flak for just about everything these days, and it seems less deserved each time. He’s not perfect. Nor should he be. The young man is in his second season as a pro. He had to switch offensive systems after his rookie year. It was always going to be a process. Now here he is, playing some of the best football a Bears QB has played in a long time and he’s still getting killed.

Trubisky didn’t play a flawless game in Miami. He was a bit off in the first half and had two brutal throws in the red zone in the second. One of which was picked off and cost the Bears at least three points. However, his ability to recover from the slow start and produce the game he did is a testament to his progression as a pro QB.

Trubisky finished the game with 316, three touchdowns and one interception. Good enough for a 122.5 passer rating. He also ran for an additional 47 yards. After three games this year he had just two touchdown passes and three interceptions. Now he suddenly has 11 touchdown passes and four interceptions. He is currently on pace to finish with the following stat line:

  • 362 completions
  • 515 attempts
  • 4,035 yards
  • 35 touchdowns
  • 13 interceptions
  • 105.44 passer rating

Like it or not, Mitch Trubisky carried the Bears in Miami

People will try to blame the quarterback for this loss. They always find a way. Trubisky had a terrible interception in the end zone early the second half. That’s 100% on him. Cannot and should not throw that. That said, the Bears didn’t lose the game because of him. If anything it was the other way around. They were in it thanks to him.

The defense gave up 28 points in the game including 15 in the 4th quarter. That’s unacceptable for a defense as talented as that. Trubisky made a ton of big plays in that half and had them in the lead with just over three minutes to go. All the defense needed to do was get one stop and the game was over. Instead they gave up a 75-yard touchdown on the very next offensive play by Miami.

Inexcusable.

So while the loss was tough to swallow for Bears fans, the long-term outlook is considerably brighter. Their young quarterback had his second-straight good game this season. People aren’t acknowledging it because of the loss but it’s all about perspective. If this is the Trubisky that hold throughout the rest of the season, the Bears can still expect to win a lot of football games in the near future.
