Cubs Lose Another Top Member Of Their Front Office

-

Not only are the Cubs changing things in the dugout this offseason with a new hitting coach and more turnover expected in the player department, but their front office will look a little different too.

First reported by Cubs Insider Monday night, Shiraz Rehman will leave the Cubs front office to join the Rangers as assistant GM.

That became official Tuesday morning, as more confirmation of Rehman’s departure spread throughout the league.

Rehman began his baseball career with the Red Sox in 2005, when he worked in their baseball operations department. That led to six years with the Diamondbacks as their director of baseball operations and player personnel before Theo Epstein hired him in 2011, when the Cubs introduced their new front office.

His duties have been varied, but consisted largely of developing the team’s database and coordinating technological efforts to better evaluate players. Something of an Epstein clone, at least on paper, Rehman is quite literally one of the smartest men in the room.

Following the 2012 season, the Cubs promoted Rehman to assistant GM.

The other big front office news for the Cubs is that Jason McLeod has reportedly interviewed for the open GM position with the Giants.

Yesterday we shared Bruce Levine’s report that the Giants were showing real interest in McLeod and today he updated the story.

McLeod interviewed for the Giants’ vacant general manager position last week, sources said. The interview hasn’t been confirmed by the Giants or McLeod, who didn’t respond to calls or messages seeking comment.

McLeod has interviewed with the Twins and Padres in the past to be GM, but he was passed up by Minnesota in 2016 and withdrew from the running with San Diego back in 2014.

McLeod’s name has also been tied with the Mets, but who wants to their first GM job to be in that dumpster fire.
