Waiting For the Elusive Mitch Trubisky Breakout? It Could Be Near

-

Chicago Bears fans are losing their patience with Mitch Trubisky. He’s a former #2 overall pick. He’s in his second season. Why is he not playing better? The louder voices are already screaming bust. He has two touchdowns to three interceptions so far this year and hasn’t really played a good game yet. There have been good moments, sure but will he ever be able to overcome his inconsistencies?

Head coach Matt Nagy thinks so. The man was resolute after the Bears’ big comeback win in Arizona. He stated he knows the team is winning because of the defense but that the offense has done its part too. The better days will come. It’s important to just give it some time. Trubisky will eventually figure it out.

To be fair, the Bears are 2-1 and currently lead the NFC North. So they can afford to be patient as long as they keep finding ways to win games. Trubisky himself admits his struggles but is trusting his coach’s preaching.

“We know we’re not even close to where we want to be on offense. I’m really tough on myself. I know I can play a lot better. Coach Nagy just keeps telling me: trust the process. He said the offense will have a breakthrough point. I believe in Coach all the way.”

Fair enough, but it’s still just words. When can this breakthrough point be expected because Bears fans can’t take much more? Believe it or not, next week might be the time.

Mitch Trubisky could finally see big opportunities against Tampa Bay

Lost in all this is the fact that the Bears have actually faced some pretty good pass defenses to start the season. Green Bay is always tough, especially on the road. Then it was Seattle who ranks 8th in the NFL and then they went to Arizona who has the 5th-most sacks and has given up the second-fewest TD passes in the league. Those are tough conditions for a young quarterback to find a rhythm.

That could change in week four. The Bears will be back at home in favorable conditions and they’ll be hosting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While that team is 2-0 so far this year, it hasn’t been because of their defense. It’s given up 61 points and an average of 376 passing yards through the first two weeks. That ranks them dead last in the NFL.

Part of the reason for their struggles is an inconsistent pass rush and weak secondary. The Buccaneers have just four sacks so far this season. They also lost starting cornerback Vernon Hargreaves to a season-ending injury. This has forced them to rely on a pair of rookies in Carlton Davis and M.J. Stewart.

Nothing is guaranteed but there’s no question this could be by far the most optimal conditions Trubisky has seen this season. He’ll be at home with no crowd noise going up against an inconsistent pass rush with an iffy secondary at their back. There’s every reason to think he can build some positive momentum if he doesn’t press too much and just plays within the system.
