Chicago Bears Work Out an Intriguing Option at Wide Receiver

-

The Chicago Bears know they may have to make some tweaks at the wide receiver position shortly. Rookie Anthony Miller dislocated his left shoulder in the win over Arizona. His health is in question. Though head coach Matt Nagy said he’s day-to-day, Miller does have a history of this type of injury. He missed all of 2014 at Memphis with a torn labrum. That might explain why the team brought in three receivers for workouts.

Among them was Carlos Henderson. Most recently the receiver was in the news due to a dispute with his original team, the Denver Broncos. The belief is he wasn’t happy over the team bringing in a host of new receivers this offseason when he thought he’d have a chance to play. He eventually reported but was cut, signed to the practice squad and cut again.

It’s a strange and disappointing turn of event for what many felt was a talented young receiver coming out of Louisiana Tech. He was a 3rd round pick for Denver. They clearly had high expectations for him, and with good reason. Now at age 23, he’s looking for his next opportunity. Should Chicago bite?

Henderson is worth the risk for Chicago Bears if they’re patient

The first word that comes to mind with Henderson is “house.” Put less cryptically, this young man is a threat to take it to the end zone every time he touches the ball. He’s got legitimate deep speed but also vision and agility in the open field to create for himself. His final year of college was incredible. He had 1,535 yards receiving with 19 touchdowns along with 805 kick return yards and two more touchdowns.

There’s no question the young man is dangerous when he’s on the field. The big question marks were does he have the work ethic to get better and can he master route running? Denver didn’t keep him long enough to find out. The Bears love having speed in their offense, so somebody like him would appeal to them. It’s also worth noting they just opened up a practice squad spot, and he’s eligible.

Given nobody else has clamored to sign him, there is minimal risk to bringing him aboard. The talent is undeniable and worth digging further into. Nagy is no stranger to dealing with players who have personality quirks. Just look at Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill in Kansas City for an idea. If they can get Henderson to grasp the fundamentals of his position, there’s no telling how much better he can get, and the Bears offense with him.
