Chicago Bears May See a Different Opposing QB Today vs. Arizona

-

All week the Arizona Cardinals have insisted they’ll continue to ride things out with veteran Sam Bradford as their starting quarterback. This despite his failure to throw a touchdown pass through two games and putting up only six points on offense. It’s clear the team isn’t ready to make the highly-anticipated change to #10 overall pick Josh Rosen. Well, the Chicago Bears may want to keep themselves on alert.

Adam Schefter of ESPN dropped a considerable hint that the winds may be shifting in that direction. While there’s been no official announcement as yet, he reiterated that there are multiple reasons for the Cardinals to make the switch. Not just because the offense is struggling. There’s also a financial motivation behind it, along with the knowledge that Rosen has gotten more action with the first team in practice.

“If the Cardinals bench Bradford after this week or even decide to release him from the roster and go with Mike Glennon as the backup, they would save over $4 million in unpaid per-game roster bonuses, per a review of Bradford’s contract.

That number would decrease with each week that Arizona waited to make that move, but there are some around the league who believe the Cardinals already are thinking about making a quarterback change.

Rosen took some reps with the first-team offense in practice, and those around him believe he is making progress and it is only a matter of time before he plays this season — as it was for fellow rookie quarterbacks Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold and Josh Allen.”

Chicago Bears should prepare for Rosen but should not fear him

There’s no question that Rosen will start at some point. The question is how long before the Cardinals pull the trigger. It’s a possibility they may do so before the game today. Just get it over with. However, it feels like they’re trying to buy a little more time until they feel the rookie is prepared. Riding out Bradford in this game makes some sense.

Does Arizona really want to debut what they hope will be their franchise quarterback of the future against the #1 pass rush in football? Sending Rosen out there to face Khalil Mack, Akiem Hicks, Leonard Floyd, and Eddie Goldman sounds like a losing proposition. The Bears already have 10 sacks this year and that was against proven stars like Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson.

Imagine what they might do against a rookie behind an offensive line that will be starting its backup right tackle. It’s a tough call. Arizona wants to protect its future investment, but also know the offense is struggling and needs a spark. If the Cardinals don’t win today, their playoff hopes are basically shattered. What will they do?
