The Bears Made One of The 10 Best 2018 Offseason Additions

-

Former NFL quarterback David Carr may have had a rough career, but he’s landed a sweet gig as an analyst on TV. It seems to be something that fits him well. Over time he’s become one of the better personalities on NFL Network, offering a fair opinion without much bias either way. So it was interesting to hear his take regarding the 10 best offseason additions of 2018. One would think the Chicago Bears were involved, right?

In truth, the list was filled with a number of shocks. Carr labeled the Denver Broncos signing Case Keenum as the #1 move, beating out the Minnesota Vikings signing Kirk Cousins. He also gave high marks to the Buffalo Bills trading up for Josh Allen, a quarterback that was far from the consensus best player at his position in the draft.

Still, he at least had some common sense ones as well. That included the biggest move of free agency by the Bears, coming in at #10.

Chicago Bears signing Allen Robinson viewed as key to offseason

“Allen is a tremendous player and gives young Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky a receiver he can count on. Allen is coming off a major knee injury and had an up-and-down relationship with QB Blake Bortles in Jacksonville. In Chicago, though, Allen will be utilized in all the right ways in new coach Matt Nagy’s offense and become a highly productive go-to receiver.”

The most reliable receiver Trubisky had in 2017 was Kendall Wright. Not exactly what one would call a go-to guy in this league. Robinson has had his recent struggles, first with a lackluster 2016 and then tearing his ACL last year. However, he proved in 2015 he can be an All-Pro with 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns. This guy is a big-game player when everything clicks.

He might finally be in an offense that fits him too. Down in Jacksonville, he was trapped in archaic schemes that didn’t know how to take advantage of his best traits. That is no longer the case under Matt Nagy. His West Spread system that worked so well in Kansas City should help him to excel again. Not to mention having a more accurate passer in Trubisky.
