Addison Russell had a 2017 season to forget. He struggled on the field, at the plate and was accused of domestic violence as well. The allegations that were made on social media never led to any criminal charges or a suspension by MLB, which did investigate the matter, but whenever there are these kind of accusations it’s probably better to err on the side of caution to avoid what happened on Tuesday.

During the home opener for the Chicago Cubs, the song, “Beat It,” by Michael Jackson played before Russell’s sixth-inning at-bat. Yeah, it’s only a song, but it’s still tone deaf by whoever approved it. Players pick their walk-up music, but you’d think someone for the Cubs would say maybe pick a different song. And Russell dude, c’mon man.

In 2016, the Cubs fired one of their DJs for playing, “Smack My Bitch Up,” as Aroldis Chapman was entering a game. Chapman began the 2016 season serving a 30-game suspension after he allegedly choked his 22-yer-old girlfriend and fired eight gun shots in the garage of his Florida home. Ultimately, Chapman was never charged, “citing conflicting accounts and insufficient evidence that would have made a conviction unlikely.”

Yes, it’s only a song, but still in bad taste there and after the Chapman music mishap, how do you not think twice about it if you’re the Cubs.
