The Cubs continue to build on their potential playoff roster, while everyone was talking about pitcher Justin Verlander, the North Siders pivoted and went after an outfielder.

The 29-year-old Martin was once seen as a top prospect for the Mariners just a short six years ago, but has since turned into a fringe outfielder bounce back and forth from the majors and minors. However, Martin did have somewhat of resurgence last season, scoring 72 runs with 15 home runs.

Martin is also a plus defender, with 45 defensive runs saved from 2013-2015, his defensive ability along with the pop in his bat could be a difference maker these final weeks of the regular season.

According to a few sources, the Cubs have been disappointed with the offensive productions in the outfield, so maybe a saw something in Martin’s game that could help their offense? Beyond that, it’s hard to really see how adding Martin does much to help the Cubs right now. Long term wise, Martin is only on a one year deal and at 29-years-old it’s hard to see the Cubs wanting to re-sign Martin – barring a surprising postseason performance.
