Bears Likely To Place Danny Trevathan on the PUP List

-

Chicago Bears linebacker Danny Trevathan is still considered a vital part of what this defense hopes to do in 2017. He’s remained active on social media proclaiming the team will get where it needs to go and that he intends to lead the way. That’s all fine and good, but it’s also hard to do from the sideline.

Trevathan is still recovering from the nasty injury to his right knee that saw the patellar tendon rupture. This isn’t the first time the linebacker has dealt with a bad knee ailment before. In fairness he recovered from that without mishap. The problem in this case isn’t whether he’ll heal. It’s when will he be available?

With training camp right around the corner the plans by the team for certain players tend to clarify. Given the mode of operation by this Bears regime, the odds are good that Trevathan may not see action until after the season begins. Adam Hoge of WGN confirmed that much.

Bears linebacker Danny Trevathan likely destined for PUP list

“Inside linebacker Danny Trevathan will likely start training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. This is not a surprise given the severity of the ruptured patellar tendon he suffered in his right knee back in November. The more pressing question is whether or not Trevathan is available at all in the preseason and whether or not he’ll be ready for the team’s Week 1 opener against the Atlanta Falcons.

It is believed Trevathan is ahead of schedule in his recovery, but it has only been eight months since he suffered an injury that sometimes takes a full year to heal.”

This isn’t anything new with the Bears. Fellow linebacker Pernell McPhee had his own knee issue going into last season. Despite him stating he was feeling good, the team weren’t going to rush him back. He went on the PUP list and didn’t return until October 20th against Green Bay. If the same holds true for Trevathan, he’d be back on October 22nd for a home game against the Carolina Panthers.

In the meantime this is a great opportunity for young linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski. He got valuable playing experience last season with the injury to Trevathan and improved as the season went on. This could be his opportunity to seize a bigger role in the defense moving forward. Something the Bears no doubt would love to encourage.
