Chicago Bears Combine QB Meetings Have One Glaring Name Missing

-

According to Walter Football and other sources, the Bears are confirmed to have met with six prospects at the scouting combine thus far. They are scheduled for a meeting with Alabama defensive lineman Jonathan Allen, which would make seven. It’s likely there will be more before the final day of drills on Monday. However, there is something interesting about the list.

It shows that the Bears met with no fewer than four quarterbacks. Here they are listed below.

  • Brad Kaaya, QB, Miami (COM)
  • DeShone Kizer, QB, Notre Dame (COM)
  • Pat Mahomes, QB, Texas Tech (COM)
  • Mitch Trubisky, QB, North Carolina (COM)

What’s interesting about this list aren’t the names that are on it. Kizer, Mahomes and Trubisky are all considered first round prospects and options for Chicago at the #3 pick. Kaaya meanwhile is somebody they could be targeting in the middle rounds. The team has scouted him heavily all year.

No the interesting part is who isn’t on the list. Where is Deshaun Watson? The reigning national champion who led Clemson in a historic comeback over mighty Alabama? It’s incredible to think that the Bears haven’t met with him yet. Especially when one considers Pace stating that starting experience and program success were such huge keys for him when drafting a quarterback.

None can come close to Watson in both categories in this class.

There is a chance this could be a premature overreaction. It’s possible the Bears just haven’t gotten their turn yet. Watson indicated that several teams wanted to meet him during his press conference at the combine. Still, it’s hard to imagine one of the teams in the top five picks would be relegated to the back of the line for meetings. So one must ask the inconceivable question.

Are the Bears not interested in drafting Watson? If so, why? Given his accomplishments one would think they’d at least like to meet the man for 15 minutes. Accounting for everything that is known about the current situation, there is a theory that might make sense.
