Through the beginning stages of the White Sox rebuild, fans have seen the team acquire four top 100 prospects. Yoan Moncada, Lucas Giolito, Michael Kopech and Reynaldo Lopez are all expected to be vital contributors to the White Sox super team of the future.
However the White Sox still have ample amount of talent in their farm system. Carson Fulmer, Zack Collins, Dane Dunning and others should play a big role in the rebuild.
One of those prospects will be outfielder Luis Alexander Basabe. Basabe was acquired in the Chris Sale trade and is currently the White Sox ninth best prospect according to MLB.com.
Basabe has appeared in 298 minor league games. He has hit .253 with 21 homeruns, 134 RBIs and 73 stolen bases.
MLB.com writes of the White Sox prospect:
Though he still has a long ways to go at the plate, Basabe is a switch-hitting center fielder with five-tool potential. He’s not physically imposing but already generates impressive power with bat speed and strong forearms and wrists, and he should have more once he adds some muscle. He shows some signs of plate discipline, but needs to improve his pitch recognition so he can make consistent contact and maximize his considerable offensive potential.
Basabe has plus speed and presently shows better instincts on the bases.
Basabe is just 20 years old and will have ample time in the minor leagues to hone his craft. He has potential to be a force atop the White Sox lineup if he can hit major league pitching. Basabe looks like one of the more promising prospects in the White Sox system.
However it is yet to be seen when fans should expect that impact at the MLB level. Not sitting inside the White Sox top five prospects or the top 100 prospects in baseball, Basabe is somewhat of an unknown to the casual MLB fan.
According to one MLB Insider that could change in 2017. Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com recently wrote an article highlighting ten prospects who could surge in 2017. Most of them weren’t insider the top 100 prospects, but Mayo believes that all 10 could end up on the list at some point.
One of his ten players was Basabe. Mayo wrote:
Part of the big haul Chicago got from Boston in the Chris Sale deal, Basabe might be a bit more under-the-radar because he came over with top prospect Yoan Moncada and flame-thrower Michael Kopech. He’s a switch-hitter who has the chance to play up the middle in center field. He’s a basestealing threat who should continue to add more power. And he turned just 20 at the end of August.
Mayo expect Basabe to break out in a big way in 2017. If his prediction came true, there’s a good chance that the outfielder could end up in the top 100 prospects. That would then give the White Sox seven top 100 prospects.
There have been rumblings that some felt the Chris Sale return package was a bit light. Those rumblings only got louder following the Adam Eaton trade. However if Basabe has a breakout season, the White Sox would’ve gotten three top 100 prospects for Sale, including two in the top 30.
Basabe is just 20 years old and will have plenty of time before he has to contribute at the MLB level. But the newest White Sox prospect is already drawing hype. Perhaps Rick Hahn found a diamond in the rough by trading for outfielder Luis Alexander Basabe.
