After his last start was cut short with hamstring cramps, Jason Hammel returns to the mound today to take on the Arizona Diamondbacks in the second of a three-game weekend set.
Hammel threw only two innings against the Dodgers on Monday before exiting the game, but is ready to go today against an Arizona lineup that has gone a combined 9-for-43 against him. Four of those hits have come from All-Star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, who’s gone 4-for-11 with a home run and four runs batted in.
The Diamondbacks will counter with left-hander Edwin Escobar, who’ll be making just his second Major League start and fourth overall appearance. In his first start, which came on Monday against the Astros, the 24-year-old gave up eight runs on ten hits in just 3 1/3 innings. The only man on the Cubs roster he’s faced is Ben Zobrist, who doubled off of him when he was called up in 2014 as a member of the Boston Red Sox.
Here’s everything else you need to know about today’s matchup.
