The Chicago Cubs go for the sweep and their fifth straight win this afternoon against Arizona and there’s a few fun storylines for today’s series finale at Wrigley Field.
For starters, the Cubs are looking to become the first team to win 40 games, so there’s that. To accomplish that, they’ll turn to reigning Cy Young winner Jake Arrieta, who’s going for his tenth win of the season. He put himself in a great position to do that on Tuesday, throwing seven innings of shutout baseball against the Dodgers, but the offense failed to produce any runs that night and the bullpen let the game get away in the 5-0 loss. It was the first time in 23 starts by Arrieta that Chicago didn’t win the ballgame. Nevertheless, Arrieta still remains undefeated in his last 23 starts with an incredible 20-0 record to go along with a 0.94 ERA.
The Cubs’ lineup also has a different look to it today as Anthony Rizzo will take his first day off of the season to get a little rest. Manning the duties at first base today will be Kris Bryant, who continues to show how amazingly versatile he can be. Take that, Ben Zobrist. Jason Heyward is also taking the day off today, leaving right field duties to Matt Szczur. Javier Baez will display more versatility of his own as he takes over third base today.
Here’s everything else you need to know about today’s series finale.
