The Chicago Cubs won their 40th game on Monday night, becoming the fastest team since the 2001 Seattle Mariners (who won 116 games) to do so. They’ll go for number 41 tonight as they once again visit the Philadelphia Phillies.
Kyle Hendricks will take the mound for Chicago in search of his third straight victory and fifth overall of this 2016 season. He certainly shouldn’t have just a .500 record, as his run support is a full two runs lower (3.4) than the Cubs’ season average (5.4), but he can only control what he can control and has pitched well, especially recently. The 26-year-old hasn’t given up more than two runs in any of his last four outings and pitched eight strong innings against the Dodgers in the Cubs’ 7-2 victory this past Thursday.
The Phillies will counter with 25-year-old right-hander Jerad Eickhoff, who’s had some bad luck of his own. He’s thrown seven quality starts in his 11 appearances, but the Phillies have won just three of those games, giving him just 2.58 runs of support.
Here’s everything else you need to know about tonight’s matchup.
