The Chicago Cubs’ road trip hasn’t gone exactly as they had planned, but even after dropping consecutive series to the Milwaukee Brewers and San Francisco Giants, they still own the best record in baseball at 29-13, three games clear of Baltimore’s 26-16. They also still have a chance to finish the nine-game trip with an above-.500 record. All they have to do is sweep the Cardinals in a three-game set at Busch Stadium. Chicago took two of three from St. Louis last month in the first series of the year between the NL Central rivals.
John Lackey made a triumphant return to Busch Stadium in that series, throwing seven shutout innings and giving up only four hits while striking out 11 and walking only one in a 5-0 Cubs victory on April 18.
The Cardinals will counter with Adam Wainwright, who’s coming off of his best start of the season, allowing no runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings against the Rockies last Wednesday. He hasn’t allowed the North Siders to score a run against him the last three times he’s faced them.
Here’s everything else you need to know about tonight’s series opener.
