After winning six in a row, the Chicago White Sox dropped their second straight last night in a 6-3 loss to the Orioles. Luckily for them, three of the other four teams in the American League Central also took a loss on Friday and the Sox still hold a three-game lead in the division. Today actually marks the 18th day of the season in which the Sox hold the division lead. To put that in perspective, they were only atop the division for 10 total days from 2013 to 2015.
Looking to get back to their winning ways, the White Sox send one of baseball’s biggest surprises in undefeated Mat Latos the mound tonight. Latos has been exceptional in 2016. In four starts and 24 1/3 total innings, Latos has given up only two earned runs and walked only seven batters while striking out 13. Latos’ 0.74 ERA is good for second-best in baseball, behind only the Tigers’ Jordan Zimmermann.
The Orioles will counter with 25-year-old right-hander Kevin Gausman, who’ll be making only his second start of the season after being injured in the early part of the year. Gausman pitched five innings in his season debut and gave up only one earned run on three hits against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday.
