The Chicago Cubs begin their second series of the season tonight as they head to the desert to battle the Arizona Diamondbacks. One of the Cubs’ key offseason acquisitions, John Lackey, makes his first start for the North Siders after spending the last few years in St. Louis. Lackey made three appearances in Cactus League play and also made two starts in Minor League camp in preparation for this 2016 season. The Cubs are off to a fast start this year, outscoring the Angels 15-1 in a two-game sweep. Jake Arrieta and Jon Lester both looked fantastic in their first starts of the year and you can bet that the new guy will want to keep pace.
This four-game series will also feature two of baseball’s best first basemen in the Cubs’ Anthony Rizzo and the Diamondbacks’ Paul Goldschmidt. Rizzo has only gone 1-for-7 against tonight’s D-Backs starter, Rubby De La Rosa, but does have three runs batted in against him. On the other side, Goldschmidt has gone 2-for-3 against Lackey with a home run.
