It’s a battle of number one starters today at U.S. Cellular Field. Chris Sale gets the ball for the White Sox and Garrett Richards will take the hill for the Angels.
Chris Sale has been absolutely phenomenal for the South Siders in 2016. In his first three starts, the left-hander has 23 strikeouts in 23 innings and has given up only six earned runs on fifteen hits. With his 2.35 ERA, he’s one of only two pitchers in the American League to have three wins and an ERA under three, the other being Mat Latos, who’s just been ridiculous thus far with his 0.49. Sale has gone at least seven innings in each of his three starts and is coming off of a complete game shutout of the Tampa Bay Rays this past Friday at Tropicana Field.
The Angels’ Garrett Richards hasn’t been quite as successful to start the 2016 season. He comes into today’s game with an 0-2 record, but those losses have both come against first-place teams. He opened the year with a loss to the Cubs, lost to the AL West-leading Texas Rangers in his next outing and took a no-decision in his most recent start against the Minnesota Twins. While the bottom three in today’s Sox lineup hasn’t fared too well against Richards, going a combined 1-for-22, the top six have hit a collective .361 against the 27-year-old right-hander.
