The Chicago Cubs were trailing 5-3 heading into the top of the ninth inning against the Colorado Rockies on Sunday. Luckily for the Cubs, Colorado put in closer LaTroy Hawkins, so in other words Chicago had a great chance to win.
Following an RBI-single from pinch hitter Wellington Castillo, the Cubs were still trailing by one. Former Rockies’ outfielder Dexter Fowler was the Cubs’ last chance with Castillo at first with two outs. On a two-strike pitch, Fowler blasted a two-run home run to right field, giving the Cubs a 6-5 lead.
Hawkins, who spent two seasons in Chicago, blew his second save for the Rockies this year. While with the Cubs, Hawkins blew 13 saves, including nine in 2004.
A great win for the Cubs, who are now 3-2 and start a six-game home stand Monday against the Cincinnati Reds.
Check out Fowler killing this Hawkins’ pitch to give Chicago a series win over Colorado.
