The 2015 NFL salary cap is $138.6 million according to Spotrac, the Chicago Bears have an expenditure of roughly $112 million heading into next season. That leaves them about $26 million to spend on rebuilding the team and creating some depth, ranking them 12th in the NFL based on available cap space.
These particular Chicago Bears players have already been signed to contracts for next year, and make up the largest cap hits the team will take.
It’s clear the problem lies with some large defensive contracts, notably Jared Allen, Lamarr Houston and Shea McClellin. The fact that Shea McClellin even gets paid anymore boggles my mind. However, a change to a 3-4 defense could drastically effect the overall value of these players while also making some of them less useful (Jared Allen).
Let’s take a look at the contract numbers and you can decide.
#15. Jay Ratliff
