The Fighting Illini picked up a win over arch-rival Missouri on Saturday thanks to a buzzer-beating step back three from Rayvonte Rice. It wasn’t the first time Illinois won a game at the buzzer under John Groce, in fact, Illinois has made six game winners since Groce became coach.
Before the Fighting Illini begin their grueling Big Ten gauntlet, take a moment to enjoy these six cold-blooded game-winners.
Every Fighting Illini fan will remember the buzzer beaters over Indiana, Minnesota, Iowa, and Missouri, but it’s the first two game winners that likely saved Illinois’ 2012-2013 season. The first shot, D.J. Richardson sinking Hawaii with a corner three, helped spark Illinois’ run to become Maui tournament champions. The second, Tyler Griffey’s deep three against Gardner-Webb, saved the Fighting Illini from a resume-destroying loss at home.
With second place in the Big Ten up for grabs, the Fighting Illini will need to continue to have success during crunch time. If their track record is any indication, that shouldn’t be a problem.
