BEST - For the first time in ten years, the Chicago Bears will likely hold a top 10 pick in the NFL draft next April. It will be the first of the tenure for GM Phil Emery but it’s important to ask. Will he stick to the trend the team has set since the start of the new millennium or will he buck it? To figure that out, here is a look back at every top 10 selection they’ve made since the year 2000.
2000 – Brian Urlacher
Selected: 9th Overall
College: New Mexico
The funny part is Brian Urlacher came out of college as a safety but coaches recognized right away that his size and speed combination would end up making him a great linebacker. After experimenting on the outside in his first year, the Bears chose to move him inside where his range would be better suited. There he would stay for the next 11 years. His career would encompass eight Pro Bowls, a Defensive Player of the Year award, four division titles and a Super Bowl appearance. Urlacher was one of the two best linebackers of an entire generation, which should land him a bust in Canton.
