Let’s not forget though, that if the Cubs hope to win right away those two names can’t automatically reverse the curse. This fairy tale will live or die with how soon their talented young core of position players can develop.
Sure, Lester and Maddon may provide the mortar that holds everything together, but mortar is useless without bricks to build with. Anthony Rizzo is a good name to start with. The Cubs’ first baseman is not only one of the best young talents at his position in the majors. He’s one of the best talents period.
And He’s Got 32 Reasons to Back That Up
The Cubs have made some great, franchise changing moves this off season. However, Theo Epstein’s plan for success is still the most crucial element to contending right away. If even a few of those names can follow the path of Starlin Castro and Anthony Rizzo, this Cubs team will be tough to beat for years to come.
