Chicago Bulls head coach, Tom Thibodeau, has so much respect around the league and you will be hard pressed to find anyone who has anything bad to say about him. (Except for a few refs he might have yelled at in the past) Count Boston Celtics’ point guard, Rajon Rondo, as another huge fan of Thibs.
From 2007 to 2010, Thibs served as associate head coach of the Celtics, and acted as a defensive coordinator of sorts as he helped the Celtics win an NBA Championship in 2008. Rondo was asked at the FedEx Forum today about current Celtics assistant coach, Darren Erman, and he couldn’t help but compare him to his former coach.
“He’s the best guy in the league to me as far as scouting reports,” Rondo said. “I call him Baby Thibodeau. Thibs is the best at it, to me, defensively. He’s the best defensive coach I’ve ever played for. (Erman is) pretty much a miniature Thibodeau.”
To be called a ‘baby Thibodeau” is a huge compliment for Erman, and is someone that will be probably getting some phone calls soon to become a head coach somewhere. Rondo went on to talk about how he can’t beat Erman to the gym just like he couldn’t beat Thibs to the gym either.
“(Erman) does the same thing, he works just as hard,” Rondo said. “You can’t really beat him to the gym. When Thibs was here, you couldn’t. I’d try to get to the gym at 7 in the morning, the only guy there was Thibs in his office. And (Erman is) pretty much the same way. It’s paid off for Thibs and it’s only a matter of time before (Erman) becomes a head coach.”
Rondo remains one of the very few holdovers from the 2008 championship team. He is now seen as a leader in Boston instead of the point guard on Celtics Big Three team. I would argue that the Big Three doesn’t win a title without Rondo but that’s for another time.
Rondo probably won’t be in Boston much longer as teams like the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers will be vying for his services as he will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. Rondo can only hope he lands with a team with a good a coach as Thibs.
