The Blackhawks have made a surprise goalie change late Saturday evening.

Late Saturday night the Blackhawks made a very odd goalie change by sending goalie Antti Raanta to the Rockford IceHogs, and calling up Lemont native Scott Darling.

According to Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune, around 11pm on Saturday night, Scott Darling and Antti Raanta will be swapping jobs.

This is very strange because Coach Joel Quenneville stated earlier in the week that Raanta would be getting at least one start during the road trip.

Darling and Raanta have almost identical numbers, but Raanta is 1-2 with a .933 Save percentage and 2.03 GAA, and Darling is 2-1 with a .933 save percentage, and 1.98 GAA.

Kuc also asked for a reason as to why the call up and Q didn’t give up much information:

Darling’s cap hit is only $570,000, almost $200,000 less than Raanta which is $750,000. The swapping of netminders will give the Hawks some cap flexibility to accommodate the recall of Nordstrom so the team can carry 13 forwards on the upcoming Circus Trip.
