By now, you may have heard about Joe Maddon opting out of his contract with the Tampa Bay Rays, thereby making him a manager free agent. You may have also heard that the Chicago Cubs are considered front runners for Maddon’s services. Joe Maddon certainly has what the Cubs look for in a manager: Experienced, good with young players, and has turned a franchise from bottom feeders to perennial contenders. In other words, he’s perfect. However, there are a few problems that need remedying.

Rick Renteria

Probably the biggest obstacle blocking the Cubs and Joe Maddon is current manager, Rick Renteria. Just a year after being hired, it’s hard to imagine the Cubs would part so soon. However, if there’s anyone who understands that baseball is business above all else, it’s Rick Renteria. Ideally, the Cubs could keep Renteria on as a coach on Joe Maddon’s staff, but that would be a tough sell.
