Anthony Rizzo is out indefinitely for the Cubs after an MRI revealed a mild back strain. He tweaked his back on a swing during the Cubs’ series in Cincinnati. Rizzo has missed the last 7 games and may sit for the remainder of the season. Rizzo will not be put on the DL due to the flexibility expanded rosters create in September. Theo Epstein spoke to reporters on Tuesday regarding the injured slugger:
“We’re going to be cautious with him,” Cubs president Theo Epstein said Tuesday. “It’s the type of thing where if it was before expanded rosters he probably would be a DL. With the expanded rosters in September there is no need to DL him. We’re going to be cautious and make sure we knock it out. It’s nothing chronic, nothing that will bother him long term, but it’s just something we don’t want to rush back from.”
Rizzo is leading the Cubs and second in the National League with 30 Home Runs.
