The defense is clearly the weak point of the Fighting Illini football team, and now it’s grown a little weaker. On Tuesday night, linebacker Mike Svetina broke his foot and it will likely leave him out for 8-10 weeks.
#illini Tim Beckman: LB Mike Svetina had surgery yesterday on a broken foot, out 8-10 weeks. That means back for Big Ten play, if at all.

“Svetina played in all twelve games (starting in 11) of 2013 at the STAR* (linebacker/safety hybrid) position. Svetina was not projected to be part of the 2014 starting defensive roster, but he is a versatile player that would be one of the first on the field when a replacement is needed.” – Aaron Rench, The Champaign Room
In addition to playing in all twelve games, Svetina was fifth on the team in tackles last season with 57. This upcoming season will be his junior year.
To have any player with Svetina’s starting experience go down, regardless of the current roster projections, is a big loss. Illinois’ defense will determine if they succeed or flop this season and they’ll need all the depth they can get.
Hopefully Svetina has a speedy recovery and the rest of the Fighting Illini Football team makes it out of training camp in one piece.
