Devin Hester, the new kick returner for the Atlanta Falcons, has had a rough start to his preseason so far. Hester fumbled his first punt return attempt which resulted in a turnover and his second attempt was a 2 yard loss.
Hester did return his first kickoff 21 yards though. As a Bears fan, it tough not to root for Hester to succeed as most think he has a legit shot at the Hall of Fame as a returner.
“When you talk about the Hall of Fame, you really don’t talk about special teams,” Hester told the Chicago Sun-Times. “You talk running back, linebacker, receiver, quarterback kind of guys. The first time a special-teams guy made the Hall of Fame — he just opened up the window for everyone else.”
‘‘I pretty much have all the return records,’’ he said.
Hester owns the all-time NFL records for combined special teams touchdowns in a career, combined kick return touchdowns in a season and punt return touchdowns for both a season and a career. Devin Hester is currently tied with Hall of Fame cornerback/return man Deion Sanders for the NFL record of 19 total returns for a touchdown. One more and he breaks the record, but this time it will be in a Falcon’s uniform … if it happens.
The Chicago Bears are currently ranked #29 for special teams in the 2014 preseason so far, according to Pro Football Focus.
