Chicago Cubs Prospect Addison Russell Dominating Double-A

Chicago Cubs

The piece Theo and Jed acquired for Jeff Samardzija, Chicago Cubs prospect Addison Russell, is putting up some impressive numbers for the Double-A affiliate Tennessee Smokies. Russell, who was ranked by Keith Law as the number two prospect in all of baseball at the beginning of the season, will become a very valuable piece moving forward.

While most of the future starting pitching will more than likely come from free agency, Russell could be packaged in a trade to acquire one. The only way Russell would stay in Chicago is if Baez or Castro are traded, and that doesn’t seem very likely right now.

Russell is Lighting Up Double-A

Russell came over to the Chicago Cubs from the Oakland A’s in July. Since July 6th, Russell is hitting .308 with an OPS of .913. 13 of his 36 hits with the Rockies have gone for extra bases. He has struck out 24 times in his 126 plate appearances with the Smokies, but let’s put that into perspective. That is a rate of 19% – Starlin Castro, this season, has struck out 18% of the time.

So, would you trade Starlin Castro or Javier Baez for an ace, knowing that Addison Russell is still in your back pocket? Or would you move Russell because he was never part of the plan to begin with, and is basically free money right now?
