As the Chicago Bears continue to make their cuts to trim the roster down to the final 53, other teams are also making cuts that could present options for Phil Emery. One of those recent cuts was a veteran return man that could add a spark to the special teams which happens to be an area of need for the Bears.
Enter Jacoby Ford, a fourth-round pick of the Oakland Raiders in 2010, is known for his exceptional speed in the return game. A recent cut by the New York Jets, Ford could be an option for Chicago as they prepare to filter through other teams garbage to find a diamond in the rough. (reported by Chicago Tribune)
Jacoby Ford has 57 career receptions, 848 yards and 3 touchdowns through four seasons in the league, but he was hurt all of 2012 — so three seasons in the league. Just barely considered a ‘veteran’ in the NFL, Ford also has four kickoff return touchdowns, three of them came back in 2010 which was his rookie year with Oakland.
Chris Williams is expected to handle the return duties for Chicago, but a recent hamstring injury has prevented him from getting back on the field during the preseason. Ford could provide immediate competition for Williams in the return game which may provide dividends for the entire unit moving forward. Williams dazzled everyone with his long touchdown against the Eagles (below), but his hamstring injury has prevented him from locking up the return spot.
Look for the Chicago Bears to add depth during the next week or two, competition is always good when the rosters are slimming down to the final 53.
