The Oakland Athletics’ General Manager, Billy Beane, pulled off yet another monster deal today, landing southpaw Jon Lester in a deal in which he traded away one of his owner stars in Yoenis Cespedes.

Love him or hate, you have to respect Beane as he is definitely ‘going for it’ this season; however, revisiting the previous blockbuster which involved the Chicago Cubs, he has to be scratching his head on the acquisition of right-hander Jason Hammel. Since joining the Athletics, to say Hammel has struggled would be a drastic understatement.
Hammel has had his proverbial doors blown off in his four outings for Oakland, racking up a astronomical 9.53 ERA, 2.12 WHIP and is a putrid 0-4 in the process. This would includes last night’s debacle in which he was hammered for eight earned runs in only 4 1/3 innings of work.
It appears Beane recognized the mistake and with the acquisition of Lester, Hammel is likely out of the rotation in the near future.
Jim Johnson, strike 1 Jason Hammels, strike 2 John Lester……? Please come through this time Billy you spent too much on this one to fail. — Ian Weimer (@ResentedBeaver) July 31, 2014
From feel good story here in Chicago to possibly out of the rotation in Oakland, just like that. He will be in competition with Jesse Chavez, but either way the Athletics have one of the best starting rotations in baseball and are going to be force come October.
